Hey, what’s going on everybody? Samson here again and welcome back to today’s video. So today we’re actually going to be looking at this portable monitor right here. This is the BE16CU (UColor T6) 4K IPS monitor from the company UPERFECT, and right now at the time of making this video, it’s currently on sale for around $250 to $280 depending, of course, on when you’re watching this.

Channel Focus & Upcoming Comparison

Now, if you’ve been following the channel for a while, you already know I’m deep into portable tech, especially handheld gaming PCs, portable monitors, and more recently XR glasses. You know, I’ve been kind of obsessed with XR glasses lately because of how much display you’re getting compared to the form factor, something this small giving you something that feels massive. As a matter of fact, I’m actually planning to do a proper comparison video between XR glasses and portable monitors, so this is really going to answer the question of which one makes more sense for which type of person, because truth be told, they basically promise the same thing: bigger screen, anytime, anywhere. So, make sure that you subscribe so you don’t miss that video.

About the Monitor Brand

But for today, we’re actually going to be talking about this portable monitor right here. Now, this isn’t the first monitor I’ve tested from UPERFECT. A couple of months ago, I also looked at their UColor 19 Apex, which was also a 4K monitor but with a QLED display, and I will tell you that monitor is pretty amazing. Apart from that, they also have OLED options, mini-LED options, and regular IPS panels that basically cover everything depending, of course, on your use case and budget. One thing that I’m going to give them credit for is that they keep their prices pretty aggressive, especially for what you’re getting.

Unboxing & First Impressions

But before I share that result with you guys, let’s just talk about what else you’re getting starting with the unboxing. When you open the box, it’s pretty straightforward, nothing dramatic. You get two USB-C cables, one mini-HDMI cable, a power brick, a VESA mount, the magnetic cover that doubles as a stand, and of course the monitor itself. Simple, clean, you know, I just like that.

Main Brightness Claim

Now, the reason why this particular one caught my attention is because of one specific claim, they’re actually saying that this thing can hit up to 1200 nits of brightness and can also be used outdoors in direct sunlight. I thought to myself, if that’s true, that’s kind of crazy for this price point because most IPS portable monitors around this price range usually sit around 400 to maybe 500 nits of brightness, but once you start crossing 800 or 1000, you’re usually stepping into mini-LED territory. Naturally, I wanted to try it out to see if it was just marketing numbers or whether you can actually use this under direct sunlight.

Display Specifications

As I mentioned already, this is a 16-inch 4K IPS panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and by the way, I actually prefer 16:10 over 16:9 for productivity, so this is going to work perfectly for laptops that support a similar aspect ratio. That extra vertical space really does make a difference when you are, let’s say, coding, editing videos, writing scripts, browsing, whatever you’re doing. It also supports HDR, has Free Sync, covers 100% sRGB, has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, 8-bit color, and it weighs about just 1.8 pounds.

Refresh Rate & Intended Use

Now yes, you are only getting up to a 60Hz refresh rate, and I know some people are going to pause there, but realistically, for what this is actually meant for, 60Hz is completely fine. It’s not a gaming monitor and of course it’s not intended for that, but if you’re gaming on a PS5 or let’s say Xbox, a lot of titles are still running at 60 frames per second or even under 60 frames per second. And I’m sure even handheld PC users without eGPU support are likely targeting 60 frames per second for stable gameplay. And when using it for productivity, 60Hz is absolutely fine. This is not an eSports monitor and of course it’s not trying to be that, but what it’s trying to actually be is a very bright, very sharp, portable display that you can actually use anywhere for whatever purpose.

Speakers & Ports

They also added built-in speakers on this thing, and I will say this, they’re fine. They exist. I wouldn’t mix audio on them or anything like that, but for casual YouTube or background playback, they are usable. Now, in terms of ports, you’re getting two USB-C ports and of course one HDMI port. On the other side, you’ve got the power button, the menu control, and of course a 3.5mm audio jack, which is also useful.

Power & Brightness Setup

Now here’s something important about the brightness: if you connect this with just one USB-C cable from your laptop, you’re not going to unlock the full brightness potential. To really push it to the maximum 1200 nits of brightness, you’re going to need external power going into the second USB-C port, and that’s where the 14W power draw comes in. Actually, 14 watts to power this device is pretty low if you think about it, which makes it possible for you to power it with just a power bank when you are outside at a café, which is exactly what I did for this test. So instead of draining your laptop’s battery or in my case my handheld device, I just simply connected it to my power bank while sitting at a café, and it ran perfectly fine. So, your setup can literally be your laptop, this portable monitor, and a small power bank in your bag, that’s it.

Real-World Performance

UPERFECT UColor T6Real-World Usage Experience

I’ve been using it for about three weeks at this point, not just testing it, but actually using it, mainly for my video editing workflow and scriptwriting at night, but occasionally I actually prefer using it for watching media content on YouTube afterwards and even a bit of gaming sometimes since it’s already connected to my handheld gaming PCs. And you know, I will tell you guys that the brightness on this screen and the color accuracy is what actually draw me to it every single time. I now find myself using it over 80% of the time instead of my main 27-inch 4K OLED monitor.

Sharpness & Matte Finish

But with this IPS panel, I just don’t think about burn-in at all. And again, because this is a 4K monitor on a 16-inch screen, you’re looking at over 280 pixels per inch. Text looks extremely crisp, razor sharp, especially when you are editing, browsing the internet, or just reading text off the screen. It’s just so clean. So even though you don’t get those inky blacks and infinite contrast that you see on OLED, the trade-off here is the brightness, and when you’re outdoors, brightness always wins. The panel also has a matte finish, as you can see, which helps with reflections. I was actually worried at first that the matte coating was going to make it look washed out or even dull, but it doesn’t. It still looks sharp.

Outdoor Performance Test

Now let’s talk about the main reason why anyone would even want to consider getting this monitor, which is of course outdoor use. So, what I did was wait for a proper sunny day, no clouds, no excuses. I took this to the café near my house and just sat down directly under the sunlight, no shade. I just wanted to see in that extremely bright condition if working with a monitor was even possible. And guess what? It was totally usable.

Sunlight Test Results

I was actually very impressed, and I’ll say the only issue was that I couldn’t sit under the sun for too long because it was getting really hot, and my devices, of course including the monitor, were heating up from the direct sunlight. But I would say as an extreme test, it actually passed, which means under normal conditions like sitting under shade at a café or under a tree at a park, the display is going to hold up really well and it will be even more comfortable and very visible. So, at that max brightness, I was able to comfortably read text, watch a YouTube video, and of course see all the colors properly. I wasn’t fighting the screen, and that’s the key difference.

Comparison & Standout Features

UPERFECT UColor T6

OLED Comparison

This is my OLED monitor right here, and I will say it’s actually one of the best I’ve used in a long time. The blacks are deep; the contrast is just insane. But if you’ve used OLED monitors, you’re going to agree with me that they aren’t the brightest in SDR mode and most of them top out at 400 to 500 nits unless, of course, you turn on HDR mode. Personally, I avoid doing heavy and long editing work on this OLED monitor because of course burn-in risk and you know what causes it static UI elements, timeline menus sitting on a screen for a long period. That’s how burn-in happens over time.

Why It Stands Out

Most 400-nit portable monitors would not survive that kind of direct sunlight. They would simply just turn into mirrors because you can see your reflection. But this one actually holds up really well, and I think that’s the main selling point here. So, if you are someone who works remotely, goes to cafés a lot, travels, or just wants a second screen that isn’t stuck indoors, this makes a lot of sense.

Final Thoughts

UPERFECT UColor T6

Now, is it perfect? Of course not. I would have loved to see maybe a 90Hz refresh rate, and I would have loved deeper contrast, but then of course we’re going to be creeping into different price brackets altogether. But for $250 to $280, getting a 4K 16-inch IPS panel that can actually push this level of brightness is solid value in my opinion.
